UET Centre and UET: A research project on the formation of collective memory

The aim of this pilot project is to create a methodologically organized audio visual database on oral accounts/ testimonies related to the historical events leading up to and following the Malsi e Madhe uprising. The period covered is the one between 1944 and 1950 at the beginning of the communist rule. This pilot project, which is the first of its kind to be conducted in Albanian studies, will help create an original framework which can be followed as a model for further studies dealing with individual/collective memory throughout the half century of communist rule in Albania (1944-1991).The specific historical events that will focus interviews for this pilot project are the uprisings of Malsi e Madhe (Shkrel/Kelmend, in January-February 1945, and Postriba in September 1946).

Eye-witness and participant testimonials will be able to provide historical context for those events as well as perspectives and consequences on the aftermaths of the unsuccessful uprisings. Interviews will be conducted according to the methodology for Visual Anthropology and Oral History (M. Mead, A. Nevins, T. Todorov and others). The research and interview protocol will be divided in three parts: (i) Conducting research and classifying official documents from State archives and other sources regarding the events; (ii) Audio/Video recording of testimonials related to the memories of the period before and after the events, aftermaths, repercussions (Field work to be conducted in Malsi e Madhe in three sessions); (iii) Analysis of the recorded material and creation of an audio/visual archive or lab in UET.

At the end of this pilot project a primary pathway to the new field of studies on Visual Anthropology and Oral History will be established at the UET and UET Centre. During this period close contacts will be maintained with Granada Centre of Visual Anthropology (University of Manchester) and European Project on Memory (consortium of different European Universities).

Fabian Kati is a documentary filmmaker with an academic background in Social Sciences. He has a BA in Political Sciences and an MA in the Sociology of Culture from Florence University (Italy). All of his past work is concerned with social and cultural investigation and his documentaries clearly show this approach. They are all primarily based on field work research (on themes such as social change, religion, emigration, life stories, memory and trauma), which are then elaborated from an artistic standpoint into a body of feature films.

Now his main interest lies in themes close to Oral History and Visual Anthropology, which are joined in his next project (based on field work research) in collaboration with EUT. The aim of this project is not only to produce a documentary film, but also to open the path to a newly structured field of Albanian studies in both (or combining) those subjects. Oral History and Visual Anthropology are planned to become part of the Department of Social Studies at EUT in the near future.

Fabian Kati has taught intercultural communication at Cospe Institute (Florence, Italy), Bibini Centre (Manchester, UK) and has worked in various cultural projects both in Italy and Great Britain.

Fabian Kati has also published a number of essays in the cultural periodic ‘Përpjekja’ and has edited an anthology based on life stories and literature of former politically persecuted people in Albania.
